I’m critical. This changed my mind

“You’re so critical, Mom,” my daughter said one night when we were out for dinner. I had to laugh. She was right.

I’ve been working in the food industry for over 30 years, so when a plate of food lands in front of me, it’s true — I do go into critique mode. I can’t help myself!

I grew up in a family where made from scratch was synonymous with love. I remember one Christmas, when my parents drove two hours into the city with my mom’s fully cooked turkey in a giant roaster, wrapped in a duvet to keep it warm. I can still picture my dad carrying it through the front door and straight into the oven before we sat down for dinner.

That’s what the holidays looked like to me growing up: planning, prepping, cooking, worrying — and hoping everything turned out right.

So, the idea of serving prepared food for something as meaningful as Christmas was out of the question!

Until last year, when I found myself panicked, behind, and hosting — and placed a Summerhill holiday meal order. I braced myself. Full critique mode engaged. I even apologized to my family in advance.

But as the dishes warmed and that familiar smell filled the house, I felt hopeful — then I started tasting. The turkey was moist and flavourful, even the white meat. The potatoes were creamy and buttery, with a hint of buttermilk. The squash vibrant, and the gravy… let’s just say the sounds around the table said everything. This meal was delicious!

Result: I’m never cooking a whole turkey again. There, I’ve said it!

I’ll happily forgo the tradition of a whole bird in the middle of the table for my new look at hosting: having time to light the candles; pour a glass of wine; and be fully present with the people I care about most — all without the stress, the second-guessing, or the risk of a mistake that your family laughingly reminds you of to this day.

Place your holiday prepared meal order before they sell out: turkey or beef, with all the delicious sides, gravy, and even cranberry sauce. It really is the best way to give yourself the most special gift of all this Christmas: quality time to make memories with those you love.
