How to Be A Better Morning Person: We Ask An Expert Early Riser

Tips from a Morning Live Eye Host on how to wake up earlier and her routine to be a better morning person.

Since jumping into the Live Eye role at Breakfast Television I can honestly say that I have become a morning person… or should I say I have TRAINED myself to become a morning person. I have trouble going to bed early, so I typically get about 4-5 hours of sleep, and then nap during the day for about an hour (sort of like a child). Waking up at 3:45am is still challenging (a year and a half into this role) but I’ve managed to navigate this new schedule of mine with these small habits that make a big difference. Here are tips and tricks that may help you too:

BE PREPARED

You want your morning to be easy and free of any stress or interruption. For me, when I have everything prepared the night before, I find my morning goes a little smoother. I lay out what I’m wearing (including jewelry and shoes), and have my bag ready at the door, so I don’t forget anything!

DO NOT SNOOZE

When your alarm goes off, wake up! Set 1 alarm, and immediately try to open your eyes and keep them open. Take a couple of seconds, but best to try to get out of bed as soon as you shut off the alarm. Don’t allow yourself to snooze.

MUSIC

So as much as I’m telling you to immediately get up and get movin, I like to wake up slow. Music really helps with that! Light, happy tunes helps put my mind in the right space to start the day off on a positive note!

WATER

If you can, I find it’s helpful for the first thing you drink to be water! Sometimes after sleeping for a number of hours you may feel dry or dehydrated, so a glass of water is a really great hydration boost to start your day

CAFFEINE

So, I’m a girl who loves routine in the morning, and part of my routine is treating myself to a morning treat— a Tim Hortons coffee. The drive-thru  lady knows my order as soon as I say “good morning” and it always tastes great! It’s especially nice when I’m running a bit late. Even if you don’t drink Tim Hortons, caffeine is a really great energy and metabolism boost in the morning. I’m not a big breakfast person since I’m awake so early, so I traditionally hold off to eat anything until about 10/11am.

Here’s my morning routine in more detail:

  • Get out of bed
  • Chug a glass of water
  • Turn music on
  • Bathroom
  • Brush teeth
  • Get dressed
  • Do hair
  • Makeup
  • Caffeine run
